Ever since Beyoncé deleted her social media profile images and sent the hive into a flurry of anticipation, the lead-up to her first studio album in six years has been nothing short of exhilarating. First, the singer left fans wondering if she was dropping new music before releasing the song of the summer 11 days later and inspiring fans to quit their jobs.
Now, as we await the release of her upcoming album, Renaissance—or, at least, “act one”—on July 29, Beyoncé has shared the first look at her album art. The artwork features a mostly naked Beyoncé à la Lady Godiva on a celestial CGI horse.
“Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world,” Beyoncé wrote in the caption on June 30. “It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”
Beyoncé first announced Renaissance on June 16 on Instagram and in a cover interview with British Vogue. The profile describes her new music as a “wall of sound” with “soaring vocals and fierce beats.”
“I want to get up and start throwing moves. It’s music I love to my core,” British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful wrote of the album. “Music that makes you rise, that turns your mind to cultures and subcultures, to our people past and present, music that will unite so many on the dance floor, music that touches your soul.”
