The internet has been abuzz over a new program known as DALL-E that uses artificial intelligence to render images using nothing more than a textual prompt. It’s not perfect, and with the images typically coming out as freakish mishmashes, developers named the program as a direct reference to the surrealist artist Salvador Dali. A free version of the software was just released to the public, so we took the liberty of curating some surreal images of our own.

This is John Diefenbaker, our 13th prime minister, posing with Big Bird. While the famed Muppet renders quite well, Dief the Chief’s appearance can charitably be described as “Picasso-esque.” Terrifyingly warped human faces is sort of a calling card of DALL-E.

Napoleon Bonaparte may have failed to conquer Russia in winter, but he could conquer any number of great deals on clothing and consumer goods on a wintertime trip to West Edmonton Mall. Here, the famed French military commander (along with his horse Marengo) is pictured making a series of heroic poses beneath one of the mall’s famous glass atria.

During the heyday of Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky, it was frequently said of him that he was “on fire.” But what would it look like if he was literally on fire? Notably, DALL-E was careful to only depict Gretzky as an Edmonton Oiler.

Sir John A. Macdonald’s reputation hasn’t done great these last few years. So there are two ways to interpret the above images of our first prime minister underwater. You can either take his immersion as a commentary on the overwhelming challenges of nation-building. Or, you can just watch him drown.

Wilfrid Laurier was prime minister at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. Despite this, he never knew the sublime dignity of the greatest fashion innovation to emerge from 19th century placer mining; a denim jacket and a pair of blue jeans. Here’s Laurier in the all-denim outfit popularly known as the “Canadian Tuxedo.”

DALL-E is particularly good at fitting animals into human clothing. These extremely suave corvids were rendered using the prompt “raven wearing a tuque.”

We inputted a number of prompts into DALL-E attempting to obtain images of Queen Elizabeth II having an extramarital affair with a member of the RCMP (“Queen kissing Mountie,” “Queen loving Mountie,” etc.) These are the best the engine could conjure; a tender and forbidden romance between two ships passing in the night.

These are the images that DALL-E returned for the prompt “Margaret Atwood and Jesus.” The reasoning being that both figures are responsible for some of Canada’s best-selling books. However, rather than depicting the Messiah, DALL-E instead depicted a smaller and more alien version of Atwood herself.

The instruction was only to render “Justin Trudeau and Elvis.” However, DALL-E unilaterally decided that if the prime minister were ever to meet the long-deceased King of Rock and Roll, he would apparently be wearing a matching rhinestone jumpsuit. Given Trudeau’s penchant for dress-up, this is actually a pretty good guess.

It is not known what Parti Québécois founder Rene Levesque thought of killer whales, but we can imagine a world in which his deep communion with the animals inspired him to attempt to found a Quebec nation that would embody their gentle strength. This is Levesque with some orcas, in other words.

This is what DALL-E returned for the prompt “Queen Victoria and the Bonhomme de Carnaval.” Note that the artificial intelligence was able to give Bonhomme an appropriately Victorian aesthetic. And while his face is indeed terrifying, it’s not much more terrifying than the actual Bonhomme.

And we end with this image of a polar bear in a skirt. DALL-E is really quite good at dressing up animals.
