Kate Middleton Subtly Paid Tribute to Princess Diana in Her New Royal Portrait

Once again Kate Middleton has paid sartorial homage to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

On June 23 the first official joint portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was unveiled. In the painting, by renowned English portrait artist Jamie Coreth, Kate Middleton wears a shimmering green dress by The Vampire’s Wife and green satin stilettos by Manolo Blahnik. The duchess previously wore the dress during a visit to Dublin in 2020. For the painting Middleton wore her hair down in soft waves and topped the look off with pearl jewelry. Next to his wife, Prince William wore a dark suit and a complementary green tie.

“I wanted to show Their Royal Highnesses in a manner where they appeared both relaxed and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified,” Coreth said, per People. “As it is the first portrait to depict them together, and specifically during their time as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the image to evoke a feeling of balance between their public and private lives.”

Following the unveiling, many pointed out that there may be a deeper meaning behind Kate Middleton’s dress. The duchess is known for dressing in looks reminiscent of Princess Diana’s signature style, and this portrait was no exception.

Though Princess Diana’s dress was decidedly more ’80s-inspired, she wore a sparkling gown in a similar shade to the London premiere of The Hunt for Red October in 1990. Diana also paired her turquoise gown with matching satin pumps.
