Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas says his Geordi La Forge pitch made LeVar Burton get emotional. It was recently announced that the entire main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation will reunite for one last adventure on Picard season 3. That includes Burton as Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge.
The cybernetically augmented La Forge was of course a central character on TNG from the very beginning of the show, going on to serve for most of the series’ run as the brilliant and resourceful chief engineer of the USS Enterprise. Burton would then continue his journey as La Forge through the entire run of TNG movies, ending with 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. Now after being conspicuously absent from seasons 1 and 2 of Paramount+’s Picard series, La Forge will finally be reunited with Patrick Stewart’s Picard and many of his other former Enterprise crewmates in the upcoming final season of the show.
Details about La Forge’s specific Picard season 3 storyline are of course being kept under wraps, except for the revelation that the show will feature Geordi’s daughters, one of whom is played by Burton’s real-life daughter Mica. Things will also clearly get heavy for La Forge as teased by showrunner Matalas, who talked to Inglorious Treksperts about pitching his story ideas to Burton. Matalas said (via Collider):
“And sitting with LeVar and saying: ‘Here’s what I think’s going to happen to Geordi.’ And LeVar [Burton] made me cry. There was a moment when I pitched it and he was so emotional and I got emotional. I was like, ‘This is one of those cool moments.’”
In addition to telling the ongoing stories of TNG’s main characters, Picard season 3 will of course delve into what those characters have been up to in the years since they were last seen on the screen. Some characters like Will Riker and Deanna Troi have obviously already been revisited by Picard. But in La Forge’s case, fans haven’t been updated since he bowed out in Nemesis. Clearly La Forge has had some happiness in his life in the years between Nemesis and Picard, as he now has children. This obviously is a big development for Geordi who on TNG was depicted as being frustrated in love, so much so that at one point he actually fell for a holographic simulation of a scientist he admired.
Indeed just the fact of the lovelorn La Forge finally finding his special flesh-and-blood someone and making a happy life could be the thing that got Burton so emotional during Matalas’ pitch. But there could be other, more surprising developments that also caused the showrunner and the actor to shed a few tears when they talked about La Forge’s future. Fans will undoubtedly get emotional themselves while experiencing Burton’s Geordi La Forge and his newest adventure as Star Trek: Picard season 3 arrives on Paramount+ in 2023.
